I have just initiated an e-petition on the government website pertaining to Energy Saving in the home focusing in particular on the amount of energy that could be saved in the UK if Government offered cash incentives to landlords (private and social) for upgrading single glazed properties to double glazed units, thereby slashing energy usage during cold weather months by a factor on average of 40% - an enormous saving in energy consumption when considered overall.

Oh, you should have added a link it sounds like a good idea... I think the governy folk do read them occasionally and they might take a note, it's just when you say something they don't want to hear that they'll ignore you.

To be honest I don't think they make much difference at all. Look at the number of government policies that are opposed by the majority of the electorate. It used to be that governments were answerable to the electorate but in recent years it's become very much the other way around.

Such a scheme may encourage some landlords to replace their windows but governments aren't keen on giving out money, they much prefer to be raking it in to spend on all the policies that no-one wants them to pursue.

There have been many online petitions and I can't think that any of them have worked other than to raise public awareness. The only action that seems to have had any effect was the Fuel Protest a few years ago - with the country virtually at a standstill the government had no alternative but to act and even then all they did was make a few concessions. Since then they've given the police and military extra powers to put down any similar 'uprising' in the future and have stockpiled vast quantities of fuel. Sounds more like to actions of a communist dictator then a democratically elected prime-minister.

Anything you can do to get the word out that the people of the world want their governments to stand up and pay attention to Global Warming and other environmental issues will work -- just don't give up. Of course, if you can find a way for the Government to believe it was their idea to save the world -- all the better and the more attention from them your petition will receive. Good Luck! Here in America, the people have to rely on themselves, because the Federal Government is in their ostrich mode....but maybe your government is smarter?

In a "green" world petitions should work better.
Unfortunatly the current national governments, either elected by "majority" (ie a little more than the other guy) or force of arms do not need to take a concensual approach to problem solving. This is part of the problem that green politics has to adress before solving our shared problems of finite global resources, trans-national pollution ...

I was recently impressed by some of the London mayor's question time I saw recently. Non-confrontational, listening to others ideas, working together.
