Electricity is probably the most efficient. The question shouldn't be "what other source of energy is there", but "what other source is there to make electricity?"
I've designed a generating system that could be put in every house in America, or shared in neighborhoods, but not having the funds to build one or know where to ask for help so I can patient it , it's just a design. Maybe I should be asking a question, "where can I get help?" with Yahoo! instead of trying to answering yours.

Horses and oxen are still good energy sources. Just ask the Amish. Or, we can burn wood and coal to operate steam engines. Petroleum is also a terrific energy source. The Bush Administration has been pushing Geothermally generated Hydrogen as a clean energy source. Windmills and water wheels can generate direct mechanical energy.

Seriously, electric power is ubiquitous. Our system of society cannot survive without it. We have become dependent upon it.

If the electricity were turned off for four weeks, most modern societies would suffer catastrophic starvation, rioting and mayhem and would quickly revert to survival of the strongest and best armed.

Electricity isn't an energy source but merely a form of energy distribution.

It happens to be a very efficient method of getting power to where it is needed along with being very flexible (you probably wouldn't want to live without it).

Biofuels and Coal which one could burn to get heat or mechanical energy aren't really things you want to burn, lots of pollution to destroy your lungs. Better to just get electricity from a nuclear power plant that won't emit anything but some water from the cooling towers.

Social Way helps reducing Global Warming by sharing your things.

www.socialway.com is a great website.
It's motto is: Share and save, the Eco-friendly way.

You can share your old textbooks, lend your tools, or anything you have to reduce carbon footprint in the world. So far, the Social Way, has reduced. 6,362 lb CO2 and you can continue the movement! Here's how.

Every transaction that you do on SocialWay saves carbon dioxide emissions - whether you lend or borrow, giveaway or receive an item. You can save more emissions by becoming an active member of SocialWay and by spreading the word. Post more of your stuff; invite more friends, neighbors, colleagues to use your stuff; find more people to post their stuff so that you can borrow rather than buy. It is amazing how much your SocialWay tree can grow through these actions. Borrowing or lending just one book can grow your acorn to a 2-year old tree.

I think we will always need electricity it's the way we create it

Hydro electric dams
when i see the amount ov water running out ov our rivers i cry,
we are paying millions of £ a year to dredge them.
Build a dam, keep the rivers full, save millions on dredging
and make millions from hydro electricity.

natural gas
and wind turbines

A lot of it can be replaced with good old fashioned elbow grease!! Think of all the MOD CONS we have in our homes today that were not there 30 yrs ago!
I would be happy to live in a world without power to every door!
But then again what do i know i am just a greenie who is crying for nature!
Blessings!

if you mean to maintain our desired standard of living... NONE.

Electricity in and of itself is 100% non-polluting. Its the energy source used to generate the electriity that MIGHT be polluting. Electricity is one of the most efficient ways possible to distribute energy.

Nuclear and Hydro are the most cost effective alternatives at this time. Solar, Geothermal, and wind works, but is not very cost effective and not as reliable.
