Someone asked me what causes PID. Chlamydia and Gonorrhea, but that's not what caused it for her. Sources also say that an imbalance of bacteria in the vagina causes it. What does that mean exactly? Is it possible that bacteria could have caused it? Or another way? She's freakin' out about it. Please if ya have any info. Thanx!

PID is pelvic inflammatory disease. It is caused by chronic inflammation of the reproductive tract. Inflammation is often the result of rampant infection, whether by Chlamydia, gonorrhea or even bacterial vaginosis (Gardnerella bacteria -- that thing you called "imbalance of bacteria").

To cure PID, you must cure the underlying infection. A doctor can test to find which kind of bacteria is causing the problem and prescribe the appropriate medications to cure the infection.

HOWEVER, if the PID has set in too long, the damage to the reproductive organs can be permanent. This may mean permanent infertility. A pelvic exam is necessary to check the extent of the damage to the woman's uterus and Fallopian tubes.

Your friend has every right to freak out. But she needs to calm down just enough to get the right evaluation and treatment. First off, she needs to know what infeciton she has. Second, she needs to get the infection cured (this may require her to get her partner tested for infection and treated with antibiotics). Lastly, she needs a pelvic exam to see if her inner-workings are still okay.

The lesson here for all ladies is: Don't miss your annual pelvic check-up, and get screened for STDs every 6 months.

she needs to talk to the doctor who diagnosed her about her specific diagnosis. it is a generic term for pelvic infection which may have a variety of causes.
