absorbed throughout the body and not just the injection site, is that correct? Just how do these shots work. and when does a controlled diabetics BS return back to normal range. MY BS has elevated since friday and thats the day I had the shot in my knee and I havent been normal range since. I think that I should have been told that this could happen ahead of time, I wouldn't have had it. I am still in pain anyway. So I don't know if it has helped and I think it makes me naseous .

Cortisone injections can definitely raise your BS and cause nausea. It can also make you feel generally achy and flushed. I've had to take steriods for many years (mostly orally and through IV) for Asthma and Lupus. Just from past experience...I would say your blood sugar may stay elevated for about 3-5 days. It should continue to lower each day until it's back to normal but I would obviously continue to watch it closely since you are diabetic. The medicine does end up getting into the blood stream even though the shot is supposed to help concentrate the medicine on a specific area. Cortisone is an anti-inflammatory similar to one our own body (adrenal glands) produces, although Cortisone is made synthetically and lasts longer than what our body makes. I havent had the shots many times but I have had to take it orally and intravenously for many years. Steroids are used for many different reasons and can be quite beneficial in some cases. They can also have some harmful side effects. I dont know for sure if this happens as much with the shots as it does with someone who has to take other forms constantly. But if you didnt get relief from the shot anyway I would suggest to see if you can find an alternative solution to help your knee. Like I said I had to take massive amounts of steriods for many years and was told at the age of 21 that I needed full hip replacements because it had caused the bones to start dying. This is not to alarm you. One shot....or even quite a few probably wouldnt have near that effect. But it can be a problematic drug...so at least talk to you Dr. before you have another one would be my suggestion. I hope your knee starts feeling better and your BS gets back to normal. Sorry for rambling but hope this info helps a little.

What you are saying is all absolutely right. Yes the injection is still absorbed through your blood stream even though it is injected into muscle/tissue. Some people do report feeling nauseous after having that particular drug as well as many other side effects including mood swings. Keep a close eye on your BS's.

Yes, cortisone is a steroid and steroids will definitely spike your blood sugar. You need to adjust medications (or insulin) accordingly and the steroid can stay in your system for up to a week after the injection. Your blood sugars should start to come down slowly these next several days.

Cortisone stays in the system longer than Dexamethasone. I have hip and knee problems and this works better for me. BS high only about 48 hours.
"Dexamethasone is a potent synthetic member of the glucocorticoid class of steroid hormones. It acts as an anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressant. Its potency is about 40 times that of hydrocortisone."
