You can actually forget the sterno and just use a tea light candle, I've done it before, it works.... maybe try a votive... or you could use lamp oil, maybe?

From experience...
You can harness the "heat" generated by the hot breath of your most talkative party guest by forcing their head underneath the metal pan of the teriyaki chicken strips on a stick...

But only if you're willing to sacrifice a little party- guest etiquette...

Trust me, it works...

I was able to keep those chicken strips hot for hours...
