Call her favorite Japanese restaurant and order some platters from them. I suggest a variety of flavors and foods that might include:
1. Teriyaki Chicken
2. Shu Mai
3. Gyoza
4. California Rolls
5. Japanese Fried Rice and Steamed jasmine rice
6. Seaweed Salad
7. Miso Soup
8. Tempura shrimp and veges
9. Yakitori
10. Beef Teriyaki
You can also purchase some of the above frozen at Trader Joes which can be reheated in the oven.
For decorations, hang paper lanterns and purchase bamboo to place in decorative pots.

Fire up the grill, filet boneless chicken breasts, grill and serve with teriyaki sauce over them, make sticky rice with Boton or Nishiki short grain white rice, sprinkle black sesame seeds over rice in bowls, sliced cucumbers in sauce(tsumomono) made up of seasoned rice vineger/mirin, honey, and splash of good soy sauce. Serve green tea, sake, and Japanese Plum wine, and Sapparo beer. The plum wine is very sweet and can be used as a chilled apertif or dessert wine. Green tea ice cream is terrific for dessert. These are all very easy to do and you really don't have to go to the Asian market to find any of it except for maybe the green tea ice cream. Make sure you have a good quality Japanese soy sauce and rice vinegar. These are the key ingredients to most Japanese sauces and flavors. The teriyaki sauce is more like a bar-b-que sauce but, has to be a little thinner than the stuff you grill steaks and burgers with.

I think that it would be fun if you had everyone make their own sushi. It would be a fun experience and everyone can make theirs just the way they want it. For information about making sushi and the equipment and ingredients that you will need go to imakesushi.com, They show you everything you need to know both with words and pictures.
