If the government cares for its economy, no ban is good.
On the other hand, Levy of highest taxes on the products that needs to be banned can earn a great amount for the government.
But if the government cares for the well being of the citizen, not just smoking, but even cultivation of tobacco and its sale in any form whatsoever except for medicinal purpose must be banned.

The Irish Government banned it here, smoking in Public. First many of the Bars CLOSED. Then those who smoke have to leave the Bar to smoke. Therefore the 'fun' is now outside the Bar! It has really split the social scene with teenager taking up smoking, rather than not smoking. I was at a Dinner where one elected Official announced his New Years Resolution is to 'take-up' smoking! He needs to keep his ear to the ground, goes to the Bar to see what is going on, however is left sitting alone, while his friends leave for a smoke. So he has decided to join them! Meanwhile people are now buying alcohol in bulk from the Super Markets and drinking and smoking at Home. Therefore Bar trade is down and jobs being lost, but the Government still get the Tax.
My Family have come here and stated going to the Bar while now clear of smoke, is not longer FUN! The older generations who always frequented the Bar with stories, chat, jokes no longer go, so Tourists miss out on what was the Real Ireland. I fear the Government did not really think this through. I was on a Train when we had a unscheduled stop, nearly everyone got off for a smoke, including the driver and the American Tourists just laughed. The other side, Home Help, those who smoke cannot smoke while they have other people working in their home, as that is now classed as a workplace. Now they are trying to ban smoking while driving, yet everyone uses a mobile telephone while driving, which is illegal here, but how do you enforce it? World has gone mad.

I think it is a good thing but i also think it is the most hypocritical thing the Government has ever done.
Forcing people to give up smoking (or limiting the places they can smoke to practically nowhere!!) but all the time still making rediculous amounts of money from the tax they put on cigarettes!!!
If they were that concerned about people's health then ban the sale of cigarettes completely!! Doubt they will ever do that cos they stand to lose too much money!!
Hypocritical to say the least!!!

Well if their plan was to shut all the pubs down then it worked. What I'd like to know is where are all these people who said they'd be in the pubs once smoking was banned? Full of it as always. I believe the right choice was to have smoking rooms and non-smoking rooms that way all clientèle would be catered for. But that only happened in Parliament, one rule for us...

Smoking is nasty. I don't give a damn how much tobacco companies suffer.
