He has the weirdest heart beat I ever heard, it beats about 3 times and then sounds like woosh instead of beat or like it skips. It can beat really really slowly 3 times then woosh and it then speeds up and is random not rythmic. He hits himself in the chest all the time hard, I'm thinking he could bruise his heart or lungs. He refuses to stop, says it's the only thing that makes it feel better.
Several doctors told him he was too young to have a heart problem. He finally found one that tested him says he has atopic beat I think it is called I know it's not spelled right. He has gotten anxiety from it and panic attacks. Now we are hearing ritilin could have damaged his heart. He has no medical insurance right now so no way to see a doctor. He wants to know if there is any medicine to stop it from doing that, he hates it. I hate seeing him hit himself.

This site has information on an ectopic heart beat (if you haven't looked into it already): http://www.pennhealth.com/ency/article/001100.htm

I'm 27 and have atrial fibrillations, so you're never too young or too healthy (my heart is healthy) to have heart problems. All I can say is to let him know that he's not the only one who's young and has heart problems. Has he had an echocardiogram to see if there are any structural issues (valve problems, etc.)? I hope you find a solution. Good luck.

Your son needs to see a cardiologist and lack of insurance is not going to prevent him from seeing one. Every major city and all fifty states have tertiary and teaching hospitals that will do a complete workup on him regardless of ability to pay, and they are EXCELLENT facilities. I've worked in teaching hospitals my entire career and while it can be very frustrating to stand in lines and deal with the bureaucracy you would have a hard time finding better care. Go to you closest teaching hospital and look into having a cardiac work-up done. He probably needs a 12-lead EKG to start and possibly an echo-cardiogram. Also...it's an ectopic beat (it means a beat that starts from somewhere in the heart other than the SA node and isn't inherently bad) but...the sound you are describing is a murmur and needs to be evaluated ASAP!

Dear Mom,

The whoosh you describe is probably a murmur. They are common. Its just turbulence as the blood goes through a valve. Sometimes we are born with them. Unless its a really severe murmur, it's not necessary to treat it.

As for the ectopic beat.. that is simply another term for an irregular heart beat.
There are many types, but one of the most common is a sinus arrythmia. Its common and normal in children. It may continue into young adulthood. When you inhale during breathing the heart speeds up. When you exhale, the heart beat slows. It poses no risk. Not necessary to treat.

Not to sound jundgemental, but you mentioned that he has panic attacks and takes ritilin. Sounds as though his behavior of hitting his chest may be more anxiety related. Not necessarily cardiac related, unless he has chest pain and shortness of breath.

Good Luck,
Angie R.N.

This is nothing to mess with or wait on due to no insurance. Contact your local social services dept and get some temporary help to get it checked or go to a free clinic in your area if you have one. There is NO age limit on heart arrhythmia's!! It may be something to worry about or it may not. You will not know until he has been examined thoroughly with EKG, holter monitor, etc.

He most likely has high blood sugar. Which is not healthy at any age but very dangerous at 3. You should take him to the hospital limitedly.

he needs to see his doctor for treatment. why are you so close to his chest? your family has bigger issues than just a "whoosh".
