Most have some sort of picture menu. I recommend taking someone who is familiar with sushi on your first attempt.

There are probably hundreds of variations with different ingredients, shapes and sizes.
The biggest misconception about sushi is that it is mostly with raw fish which is absolutely false. The only thing for sure in sushi is the vinegar flavored rice, beyond that, just about anything goes. There are many that entails only cooked seafood and/or meat and it can be with or without seaweed. It can be as simple as just a steamed prawn on a lump of rice or it can be a cut roll with half a dozen fillings inside.
Most of the menu actually explains what the ingredients are and many use pictures in addition. When in doubt, just ask the waitress.

The sushi restaurants usually have a descriptive menu. For the inexperienced, restaurants will also have a picture menu - just point and order.
Sushi is really good! It's not all raw fish like some people think.

Tell the server that you haven't tried sushi before. Ask him/her to select some tasty kinds. Most sushi restaurants have menus with pictures and descriptions, and offer combinations. I usually order a "bento box" to get a little of everything!
Try California rolls (avocado & crab, usually) Yellow-fin (tuna) and negimaki (grilled beef wrapped around green onion)
Try tempura (meat, seafood, and vegetables dipped in batter and deep fried, served with a soy based sauce)
or a teriyaki, domburi, or sukiyaki dish over rice (various kinds of meats cooked in broth and served over white steamed rice or noodles)
Just ask!

>> I'm in Australia ~ we have a product called Vegemite here. Is a sandwich or toast spread & is made from the yeast at the bottom of the beer vats from the breweries (I kid you not, it's true!) It actually tastes great & is black in colour ~ I guess it's an acquired taste though as people from other countries often dont like it when they visit & try it. >> The prices of things? I dont know what the food prices are like over in USA, so I cant really answer you, as to whether our prices are higher here. But a while ago here, we had cyclones that wiped out nearly all of Australia's banana crops (mainly in Queensland) & after this happened, (there werent many bananas to be found in stores) but the price of bananas (as you can prob guess) went sky high for about 9 months or so....The price of bananas rose to about $12 per Kilo. (usually around $3-4 where I live.)

YES! sushi can be cooked OR raw.
And if you know what ingredients you like- shrimp, avocado, cucumber- are average ingredients, you can request the sushi chef to customize a roll for you. Don't be shy! There are lots of options and pictures to help you.

There are too many different kinds to list, but any good sushi restaurant should have a wide selection for you to try, and the staff will be glad to descibe and recommend th different things.
