Herpes simplex virus 2 tends to be worse. The outbreaks are more severe and tend to last longer then ones caused by herpes simplex virus 1. HSV2 also tends to affect the genital area more which is a lot more sensitive.

They are virtually identical. Although they are distinctly different genetically, they share much of the same homology. They big difference is where each usually establish latency. Contrary to popular belief, HSV1 is potentially more dangerous causing the vast majority of herpes encephalitis, herpes meningitis, and ocular herpes. The only strike against HSV2 is it causes 2/3 of neonatal herpes. Both are asymtomatic in most people that aquire it, especially if outside its site of preference. HSV2 is actually a little tougher to transmit. The social and emoitional impact for HSV2 is far worse than 1. This typically has the most weight in the minds of the public therefor the negativity surrounding HSV2. Since sex is such a taboo in the public eye, and HSV2 is usually ascociated with sex, a stigma is unjustly placed. On a final note, HSV2 is no more dangerous than HSV1. Also, genital herpes regardless of type, is less of a concern than an oral infection.

Type 1 is oral herpes. Cold sores. Type 2 is genital herpes. 85% of Americans has type 1. type one is only contagious when you have an outbreak.

I agree with the person who said they are virtually identical. I have included a link to an article. The only caveat is that there is a lot less of a social stigma around HSV1 which makes it, from an emotional and social perspective, easier to live with.

type 1 can morph into type 2...
if a person has herpes type 1..on their mouth..and has oral sex....then it can be transmitted and become type 2.
