Germans in cities eat the same way as city-dwellers in other countries - lots of different types of foods from lots of different backgrounds. For main dishes, they eat chicken and pork the most, plus beef, veal, turkey, fish, et cetera. Goulash (which is actually Hungarian) is very popular, as are Italian-style pasta dishes with tomato sauces. Simple roasted meats are ubiquitous (roast pork loin, roasted chicken), often with potatoes (boiled, roasted, mashed, and au gratin) or spaetzle. Sausages are more of a lunch or late supper kind of thing, from my experience.

These days, I've had a lot of Germans tell me that younger people eat Italian food, because it is lighter than the huge chunks of meat and potatoes which are traditional. I notice that a lot of people answered Wiener Schnitzel - while you can get schnitzel in some places in Germany, that is actually Austrian, not German (Wien is the German name for Vienna, which is in Austria).
