Mucous refers to material from any area,nose,vagina some bowel discharges and that which is coughed up.

Mucus is a general term for the thick, slippery fluids of the body including your nose, intestines, mouth, vagina, etc.
Phlegm is the mucus from the body's airways-- your lungs and trachea.
Sputum is the same as phlegm, just another name for it.
