for my summer party last year i had a big canvas and people signed it, and now its hung up in my room and i love it. i want to do that again this year but with something besides a canvas. any ideas? (the theme is "welcome to the OC")

It's still canvas -- but what about an old sail with a star or number on it. If you could find one with a 7 on it, or applique '07, it would be awesome.
I see no reason you couldn't continue with the canvas. Just make it a little different from year-to-year.

Go to an auto junk yard and purchase a car door, hood, rear panel, or roof. You should be able to get one fairly cheap. Spray paint it your desired color and attach brackets for hanging in the future. Purchase markers for guests to use on the day of and let them sign it.

I would suggest a surf board, kites, parachute, or beach balls. I saw the beach balls hanging from a ceiling once and it actually looked really cute.
