I want to begin baking and decorating simple (one or two layer cakes) to bring to family parties. What are tools that I may need (offset spatula, springform pan, parchment sheets, turntable, certain tips, piping bag, etc.) and where is the cheapest place to obtain them (online, restaurant supply stores)? What's a good basic recipe to follow for the cake, buttercream and icing? Are there any good online resources such as videos or pictures to follow?

I just took the Wilton's Course I at my local Michaels store. It lasted 4 weeks, one class a week. You wouldn't believe how fast you will learn how to make beautiful cakes! I brought my final cake home tonight and couldn't believe how nice it looked.

I think I paid $25 for the course, and another $50 for the supplies. I ended up buying some Styrofoam dummy cakes at the local bulk store because I didn't need to eat that many cakes all at once so it held the price of consumable supplies down to a minimum.

Good luck and have fun decorating!

A lot of it is just practice. I know you have heard it before too! But you can get kits for student decorating at most craft stores or try Walmart if you have one near! spring form pans are nice for have tier cakes or just a regular 8 or 9on circle pans are a cheaper way to start so you don't get mad if you ruin them.! But good luck and if you want any flavor ideas let me know i have tons of books!

check with your local high school. they often have evening classes for adults including cake decorating which will provide you with all the info you need. jr colleges also provide these classes. both for a very nominal fee. yahoo search for "cake decorating classes" is another good start. the wilton company offers decorating classes in towns all over the us. they too teach all you need to know but check the cost.

Constantly search restaurant supply stores, Ebay, etc for new materials.

Consider sources for various flavors, colorings, texture and icing design ideas. edible rose petals (see your local high-end florist) and be constantly considering ideas to create your own unique flare which will give you an edge over the competition.

Oh, wait...you don't want to do this as a business?!
