From my Christian point of view, this places the "flesh and the spirit" in context.
Work as if the "flesh" lives forever means, to me, give this life all you have. Make a positive difference for self, family, your world.
Work for your afterlife, as if the "spirit" lives forever means, to me, be ready at any moment to leave this world for the next. Live your life so the right door is open.
Again, this is a Christian point of view and not meant to proselytize.
