There are several nice devices for crushing/recycling glass at home. Here are some links to sites offering these devices:

Depends on how finely you want it crushed... and how much you need to crush.

Commercial glass recycling takes the glass and passes it through successively closer spaced rollers that crush the glass under high pressure resulting in very fine dust.

You could use the hammers... but the glass fragments will fly around and it can be very dangerous. Note that there is NO cloth you can wrap the glass in to safely smash it with hammers. The glass will shred the cloth as you crush the glass.

I would suggest putting the glass between 2 metal plates with a seal of some sort to trap the fragments, then squeezing the plates together in a hydraulic press.

Hi Matt, if I were in your position, I'd probably use a very thick sack, or sacks. It's dangerous to directly hit glass with a hammer because shrapnels could always hit somebody, including yourself. Try putting your glass/bottle inside three layers of sacks (the more the layers, the better,) then hit repeatedly with a mallet till kingdom come. I would prefer to use a mallet because it's heavier, and the area of contact is wider. You could also try slamming the sack on the ground, just make sure you don't do it inside the living room.
---------------------------------

Additional: For safety measures, make sure no one is around when you do your unkind deed (unkind to the glass.) Also, you HAVE TO wear goggles and a mask.

I'd put it inside a bag and hit it on the ground or use a sledge hammer. Have fun.

Use a towel, to protect yourself from the shattering & as one responder said hit it on concrete, slam it. you can use a rubber band to tie the towel securely. make sure that you use gloves when removing the pieces and use a fine tooth comb to clean the towel to make sure there are no glass shards on it. you can even line the towel with newspaper to prevent the glass form clinging to it.

i hope this helps
