What is the purpose of your life that it is worthy of your living it? You have great gifts, your wife and your children, but are you just using them to occupy your time until you die? Is that a worthy purpose for your life? In a materialistic worldview, love is nothing more than getting some feelings. How noble, how worthy is that?
You say the world is special and unique but look in the sky and see the clouds. Every one is special and unique. You are like one of those, but the specialness and the uniqueness of the cloud does not give it meaning or purpose. Only through self deception can you think that your life, your cloud, has any meaning or purpose.

As Christians, we do not so much look at the here and now, but on the hereafter. To us, we find it hard to comprehend what atheists believe, that once you die there is nothing. To us it is sad that these people live there lives thinking this. That you guys, as we all do, live through the hardships of life, pain, sadness, loss of loved ones, sickness and all the other things that life throws at us, all for nothing. For Christians who have the promise of joy and happiness after death, an athiests life does seem sad and empty.
To you our lives may seem dull and boring as you are on the outside looking in. Growing up as a Catholic who only attended church once a week without really understanding what was going on, I can see what you are saying. But if you were to look at Christianity more closely, and really get to know some Christians who are "alive" or "on fire" you may be surprised!
Life as a Christian is by no means sad and empty, and we do know how special life is.
We live each day with joy and happiness, as we know that we are loved and cared for the Creator of the Universe, and we have a great future that not even death can take away from us.
Thanks for asking the question, and I hope that you will continue to ask more questions so that you will have a better understanding of what Christians believe.

Very beautifully put. I have repeatedly tried to address those statements. I also, have had a wonderful life, and even though I am quite ill now,and unable to do some things physically I once could,in my house,it is a joke a minute. My entire family has comedian in their blood. There are memories I have,of things I have done ,and places I have been. That are just so darn special. Given eternity,it would seem to take the specialness out of it. I had this time,I lived it for the living. I really like that you get that we can only speculate on what type of life forms are out there. I was just having that conversation with my wife last night. Some can speculate, but, with so many variables, and only one sample (Earth) to draw conclusions from.Any speculation about the nature of alien life is just that ,speculation. Which is cool with me. I'm not sure sometimes whether I like the question or the answer more. Answers are great, but questions really stimulate the brain. Anyway,I have had a wonderful, very meaningful life, complete with it's share of tears and heartache. But that only served to make life's' little victories that much more special

Uh...I make the most of everyday and i am Christian. First of all Christianity is based aorund faith. Faith and Religion are two different things. Faith is belief in the things hoped for. Religion is an organized belief system created by man. God is not created by man so why do men try to organize it? You should watch the episode of South park from season 11 that pokes fun at the Da Vinci Code. It makes a very good point about this. I am not religious at all, becuz i could give a damn about what some ppl at some church think is ok to do or not.

I think they are more referring to the part that as an Atheist you don't really have anything to hope for in the future. In 70-80 years, you're going to die and that's that. That seems kinda grim to me. They're talking about a hope for a life after death, where when you die it's simply the beginning of something better.
C.S. Lewis has a great quote that sort of pertains to this. He said that "If Christ rose from the dead, nothing else matters. If Christ did not rise from the dead, nothing else matters."
It's great that you're happily married and you have a great job and family, but people say it has to be sad because you're missing out on the wonderful love of God and a life after death.
You're right that life should be enjoyed, but I don't see how admiring God's handiwork on Earth is any less enjoyable than looking at the beauty of Earth without believing in God.
Personally, I believe in God and I am no less happy than any other person out there. I don't want to get preachy, and this is merely my opinion, but at least in my school, I can see the difference of believing in God and not. You have something that can always bring you joy even if life sucks (which it does at some point or another for everybody.)

Interesting.... and the question was...???? Why....??? Oh yeah... Why are there always a few christians saying that atheist are sad and live empty lives?
I can only guess that they say stuff like that because they're trying to scare people away from the truth about Atheism.
It all comes back to spreading fear and lie-telling... Christians seem to have a lot of trouble with simple honesty, don't they?

POST SCRIPT: Look at this guy below (the next answer)... Like, he's an authority on the atheist psyche... He probably has no idea what he's talking about and so he's just making up whatever BS-lies he things might fly. Snotty nosed kid.
Check it out... He's just read a truly honest testimony from a living human being and he won't believe a word of it....
...and look at them line up after him.... all selling fear and gloom and doom and BS-lies.

for an atheist to believe in marriage, children and success so where do your values come from? don;t you know that there's a prediction regarding your state of being at the moment that just as you think life couldn't get any better, all things that define you will suddenly be taken away from you in a blink of an eye?
Here you're trying to lead others astray and tell us that your life is not truly empty? it surely isn't yet and although God forbid that, it' sure enough will be soon.
As for the supposedly "wonderful work" that you're doing for all the other non-believers to you the book says,
"Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of ... commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven;..." Matt.5:19

It seem as though we've had similar upbringings. I can honestly say that without a doubt when I gave up the catholic religion and the whole hold it had on my life, I felt free. I don't believe in gods or religion because it's really not natural. Most people in this world are forced to believe. I know I was. I'm glad to see that more and more people aren't forcing children to believe or not to believe, but let them grow up and decide for themselves.

This "unhappy, empty lives" BS is the argument of those with out argument. sort of like a final ditch attempt. If believing the earth revolves around the sunlight made human beings run around bare contained in the streets with chain saws beheading infants, it would not exchange the reality that the Earth revolves around the sunlight.

I am a Christian. You are an Atheists. It makes no difference to me what your beliefs are. I dont have any feelings for you what so ever. I do however feel that the fact that life does exist proves the existence of a creative intelligence that I choose to refer to as God. If you choose to believe that life appeared from nowhere, goes nowhere, and means nothing, that is your choice. The next time you look at your children try to explain that there is no God.
