"Run things" ....what "things"...?
You can start here http://www.rain.org/~philfear/how2solar.html
and here

'things'. What things?

You can buy a solar charger (search internet or ebay) to charge batteries which will then power your 'things'. I have a solar charger that charges batteries and also charges my phone and a PDA.

If your 'things' include a dishwasher, you are looking at big money. In that case google on 'solar panels'. Several countries have solar incentives for solar panels on your roof.

So define 'things', then you know what kind of panels you need.

You can do it yourself IF you are familiar with electricity.

The principle is straightforward:

A solar panel will feed a battery charger.

- If you need 12 Volts to power your "things" you can have it directly from the battery. If you need less then12 volts you can connect a voltage regulator to lower the voltage to the desired value.
- If you are planning to power some home appliances or light bulbs, you need to convert the 12 volts coming from the battery to 110 or 220 volts (depending on where you live).
To do so yo need a DC to AC inverter.

Solar power (also known as solar energy) is the technology of obtaining usable energy from the light of the sun. Solar energy has been used in many traditional technologies for centuries, and has come into widespread use where other power supplies are absent, such as in remote locations and in space.

Solar energy is currently used in a number of applications:

Heat (hot water, building heat, cooking)
Electricity generation (photovoltaics, heat engines)
Transportation (solar car)
Desalination of seawater.

If you own a lot of gadgets, you need a lot of power and you may not have enough space to put up those photovoltaic cells (solar panels) to generate all the power you need.

Solar cells are photovoltaic cells and convert sunlight into electricity.

hi its nice to make it
u have to bought solar cell and then design some series and parallel combination ckt so that u can give to enough current and voltage to the application.
but it will be too expensive.
