I tend to write detailed answers because I have a lot to say. I try to keep on the subject, and generally succeed, but I do know what you mean. I think the people who put in long wandering rants must know few people are reading them. They do it to get it off their chest.

But even though the average attention span is probably as short as you say, there may indeed be some users that read the whole thing, especially if they find the first paragraph interesting and reasonably readable. I have read long, detailed answers when they grab my attention. Not often, I will admit, but sometimes.

What you say is true -- probably because the majority of answerers are children. Is that how we teach our children? Talk down to them? If we offer them something to sink their teeth into, perhaps they'll take the challenge and, if nothing else, learn a few new words along the way. And if they don't read what's offered to them, we've nothing to lose. They're the losers.

Some people might want to make sure that there is no confusion in their answer or make a point.But often, what bugs me, is when people cut and paste from a website an entire book.If people want to read all that then just give the link in your answer and then let people decide on whether they want to follow the link to whatever it is that you're wanting people to read.
