I'm privately selling my car and am worried about someone stealing it on a test drive. What precautions can I take? Any other scams I should watch out for?
Thanks

If you are selling you car (privately)

(a) don't let the buyers just go off drive your car by themselves. Go with them - or send your father / brother / boyfriend (if you are a woman).

(b) get paid in CASH.

NO MATTER WHAT!

(c) meet in a neutral location - McDonald's, etc. Not at buyer nor your house / home. You don't want this buyer to bug you once you sold the car, or why are you selling it.

(d) get an estimate of what the dealer would pay you. Don't go any lower than that from private sales.

(e) depending on your state law, make sure you KEEP your plates. My father sold his car and left the plates on it. Six months later we got notice from the DMV saying we owed something like $6K in parking tickets (OK part of the problem is that here in NYC we get tickets for scratching our butts while parked... but that another story).

(f) get photo copies of buyers drivers license (just in rare case it is used in some crime later) to prove you sold it.

Also look in your own state's DMV website. It should have guide like on what papers works you need need.

I don't know that you have to be paid in cash, but a good thing is to get a cashiers check and a signed bill of sale. To be really safe, go to the buyers bank with him/her and get the check made out right in front of you.
