While some people prefer a book, taking lessons is really the best way. With an experienced instructor, you'll learn faster, and you'll learn more. You'll also be able to avoid technical mistakes that can come back to haunt you later, and learn proper form, which may not sound too important, but can prevent you from slipping into a comfortable pattern that can actually cause long term damage to your wrists. As far as not wanting to devote your whole life... music conservatories typically recommend practicing at least 3 hours a day to improve, 2 hours if you want your skill level to remain the same. For beginning to intermediate, I recommend at least 1 hour of practice a day. Unless you start studying more technically demanding pieces of music, 1 hour should be sufficient. Basically, you get out of it whatever you put into it.

I just found another site that I found very interesting it's: http://www.jamorama-jamorama-Mi This guy teaches all levels of guitar, sounds great to me. Your attitude is much different then mine, all I wanted to do was play guitar since I was about eight also, but I did want to devote all my life to it. In the early days I would play at least eight hours a days, sometimes I would get up at four o'clock in the morning if I was studying a piece that I couldn't wait to get too. Even today I would consider it fun to do nothing but play guitar all day. If you don't find the site that I gave you for you then get a teacher at one of your local music stores or get a method book, the clerks at Sam Ash are good and so are the clerks at Guitar Center, tell them what your looking for and they will be able to help you, and start from there.

Music is something that you can continue to learn all your life. My piano teacher still takes lessons for piano and she has been playing for years. I would recommend finding a good guitar teacher if you are serious about learning. A good teacher can help you develop your skills quicker then on your own.
