Pinch your nose and lean forward ~ DO NOT LEAN BACK! If you lean back, you can either swallow or aspirate the blood, neither of which is a good situation.

Pinch the nostrils closed and put the chin to the chest until the bleeding stops. Do not tilt the head back; this will cause blood to drain into the stomach and will cause nausea. If the bleeding is caused from a nose injury, apply ice and go to the ER.

Do NOT tilt the victim's head backward.
Have the victim sit or stand upright to slow down the flow of blood.
Loosen any tight clothing around the victim's neck.
If possible, have the victim spit out excess saliva - swallowing may disturb the clot and cause nausea.
Pinch the nostrils shut and press the tip of the nose against the bones of the face.
Maintain pressure for 5 to 10 minutes.
Once the bleeding has stopped, the victim should avoid blowing his nose or otherwise straining himself for at least an hour.
Take Care!

DO NOT TILT THE HEAD BACK, as blood running down the back of the throat will cause vomiting. (not a good look)
For a normal blood nose;
Pinch nostrils (at end)
Lean forward
Mouth open to allow the excess blood to drain onto the ground
Avoid swallowing the blood
* Emetic
Can/may induce vomiting
If bleeding continues for more than 10-15 minutes, then seek medical aid.
If blood nose is caused by an injury/head injury then treat as above but seek medical aid immediately.

Do not tilt your head backwards, it could cause gagging and then vomiting. You may slightly pinch your nose, but gently. Also apply an ice pack to the back of your neck. If it continues or begins to happen again or more frequently, seek professional help or go to the emergency room. (by the way, the ice pack really works)

Okay I teach daycare and this is what I had learned. Using a tissue pinch your nose. Then while still pinching your nose tilt your head down or forwards, not backwards. If you tilt your head backwards the blood will drip down your throat.

in nose bleed...tilting the head back is already out-dated..and reseach says that it has a higher percentage that you'll aspirate blood...
now in treating nose bleed..
just LEAN FORWARD while pinching the cartilage part of your nose. but you can also put an ice pack in the nose bridge.
placing an ice pack in the bridge of the nose makes the blood vessels to contract.

For those who say tilt your head, when did you last do a first aid course??????
Mine First Aid is current as of March this year.
Beatrice and Georgie are correct in saying DON'T TILT YOUR HEAD. Tilting the head can cause vomiting.
Sit person down, and lean slightly forward and pinch the end of the nose.

pinch the fleshy part of your nostrils together, and put your head down, whatever you do, don't put your head back, it will cause the blood to run down the back of your throat, making you sick.. when the bleeding has slowed down, put a tissue or something up there to get it to stop... whatever you do, dont pick your nose or anything like that, it will only cause it to start bleeding again.
