they would come over for family reasons (if part of the family was already legal and established here and did have a job, the parents/spouse/kids will come over to join them).
i know people who came here if they have a child that is very sick, because the medical treatment is better here than there.
also many people come here because it is easier to be poor...welfare, medicaid, WIC, free education, government subsidized housing. after all it's better to be poor w/out a job here than poor w/out a job in Mexico or Central America. The only drawback is the cost and risk associated w/ getting here in the first place.
but, i think that if there were NO jobs available the vast majority would not come over. they are looking to improve their lives not stay poor. they would have better luck going to one of the border towns and working in factories, or going to Europe or Canada.

Social aid, what else? I'm not generalizing all of them by any means. However, I did go to high school in the mid 90's with mostly children of illegal immigrants. They not only admitted this, but bragged about being the prized anchor babies of their families. They also blatantly announced over and over their families "did not come here to work hard but to work the system." Now how can I have faith in a group of people coming here when this is what I heard myself from their mouths??? These same kids would then put their babies in the free childcare we had at our high school (maybe 50 kids there in a day easily) and head off to class.

First of all, the number of illegal immigrants would fall substantially. It's possible that America wouldn't even notice illegal immigrants if they did not come for work.
I can think that all the drug violence in Mexico would drive people to America. People would then come for the freedoms that America provides. But this doesn't have much to do with Mexico. If America bordered Iran, for instance, we would see many people illegally immigrating due to the personal limitations imposed by the Iranian government.

u need to work with mexicans to create a deal which makes their life quality better and also benefits americans and not american corporations only in a way also!
thats the only solution... as far as there is significant difference between average lifestyle... the problem will presist... cuz its about how u live not what kind of job u get... some illegal immigrants do "illegal jobs" like drug dealing which is according to the current law not appropriate nor allowed for anyone...even the citizens... but yet they come to america to do it cuz they can live much easier here than in a mexican village or small town... shops, driving law, streets, overall US sounds much better place to live in than mexico regardless of your job here!

Not many as most assistance you are required to be a citizen!
The biggest welfare recipients, and frauds, in this country are corporations!
To the person above me. Oh we would know if they didn't come to work, especially in the agricultural industry! And you think gas is expensive!

Employment is certainly the predominant reason. But, considering the employment rate, the question is most assuredly hypothetical.
