It depends very much how you define "Christian"

Only about 6% of the population go to church on a given Sunday. (And it's dropping)
More would claim to be Christian of "C of E" but show little practice or knowledge to back this up.
"In data revealed in a Mori poll from 2003 Aug, only 55% of the English population could name one of the four Christian gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke or John). "

In good part this is due to a "residual" Christianity coming from it being established as the State religion, and some vague contact with prayers and churches, especially for Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals. This may indeed be the only contact, out of sheer tradition.

So yes, you are right, the number of Christians by some methodologies is suspect.

I think that I see what you are getting at here.

Yes, it's unfortunate, but many Christians are "nominal Christians". IOW, they were baptized when they were infants, and were given a Christian name, but that's about it - they don't really practice the Christian faith.

As far as how many are in England - if present demographic trends continue, England will be a Muslim country in about the next twenty years or so. (no kidding - it *will* happen)

a shrinking number. Islam is the new Christianity as Christianity was the new Judaism as Judaism was the new polytheism as polytheism was the new ancestor worship as ancestor worship was the new superstition as superstition was the new habit as habit was was the new luck as luck was the new coincidence. Choke on that.
