According to the Gallup poll, 1/3 of Americans believe that the Bible is literally the word of god and should be taken literally word for word. How does this make you feel? Personally it makes me scared that the world could be filled with such ignorance.

I find that it is scary to know that about the same number of people in this country vote! The 2/3 of us that think for ourselves should stand up and be what we are...a majority.

yeah thats brainwashing they're probably illiterate in breads death to the bible the next time they try to convert me im gonna invoke satan. I wanna go to a church wearing a devils costume and a pitchfork and ask if i can be saved that would be classic. christianty is dead the religion of the new aeon in the west is thelema do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law\. no longer shall we be oppressed.by the slave gods what once worked has become old and useless now the child must find their own way the old religion is stale and is block ing the collective conscious of the species from evolving. These are the peope that beleive that bush a member of the skull and bones is christian and was literally advised to go to war in iraq by jesus in the flesh at the whitehouse this is why we are in the mess we are in these are the sheep to the slaughter this is mind control easily swayed i blame them for being suckered into this war bush is an occultist not christian no one in washington believes that they just pretend to cause its so easy to manipulate the masses. The bible is a brainwashing tool used by those who know better to sway the masses. Shame on them burn in hell sinners. They are lying it says to chop off your body parts in the bible if they cause you to sin but no one does that ha ha. Don,t let it scare you that people are so stupid I know it is scary but use it to your advantage like the politicians and manipulate the weak for personal power and what have you. Remember 10s of thousands of women were burned at the stake by these types and if ya think about it that way its the same mob mentality that got jesus on the cross so yes be cautious but dont live in fear. The bible is filled with animal sacrifice genocide incest genital mutilation so yeah its dangerous. its like giving a monkey a gun.death to christianty. 666 the great beast. The only recourse is the vote. If you don't vote, you have no gripe coming. It is hard to choose. A great many politicians are slick and would just as soon lie as take a bribe. Our job is to sort out the ones that are likely to cause the least evil. If an atheist was running for office I would subject him/her to the same scrutiny as I would anyone else. I have yet to run across a totally honest individual regardless of religious persuasion or lack thereof. Myself included because I can lie like a living room rug on occasion. This just doesn't happen to be one of those occasions.

Did you see the Simpsons episode recently where the criminals were talking about how language was their stock in trade?
The problem with taking things word for word is that criminals use code. Nice people know how to use metaphor, which means bearing the meaning of one word over to another word. The apostle Paul said that many had heard the word but only some had accepted it with faith, which carries implications of tranquilisation and compliance. To some it had settled their concerns in life and given them direction and purpose with peace as their aim. This is not going to happen if people insist on their own reading as applied to other people.
1 Timothy 6:4
They are conceited and understand nothing. They have an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions.

I bet the percentage is higher in the Muslim world. And the scariest thing about that is, even though Christianity is also scary, if we believed as much as the Muslims did like we used to, the war would be over by now.
We need to come together on something though, Christianity or whatever, or it will be our downfall. We are already spiraling.

I think progress may have been made, actually. A couple years ago, more than 50% of Americans did not believe in evolution. Ignorance may have dropped 20% since! Cheers!

It worries me of course. But it does not surprise me. I think if yo did another poll you would find that more than half of the people that claim to believe it, have never read it.

Sad and scared. Sad that people in a country with so many ways to seek information are so ignorant and blind, and scared that there are actually people who would believe the Bible, yet alone word for word.
