the term "wearing course" is common in bridge design where the wearing course is defined as that portion of the concrete deck slab which is deemed to be sacrifical, i.e. it wears away as a result of traffic on the deck.

Typically, 1/2" is set aside for wearing surface. Its dead load is accounted for but it is ignored during the computation of section properties of the composite section.

The unit weight of 1/2" of concrete = 0.5/12*150 pcf = 6.25 psf
