Regular unleaded, plain and simple. Most vehicles on the road are set up to run on 87 octane.Unless you have preformance mods,it doesn't make any sense to run higher octane, especially w/ the price of gas these days( arm an a leg).If you want, try using an additive like FUELON.It will increase gas mileage and keep your emissions low while keeping your valves and combustion chambers clean. You can find it at most auto parts chain stores.I use it,and it works.Good Luck

Start with the cheapest gas and drive up a hill with the pedal to the floor (like it would be passing a big rig. If you don't get pinging you are good. If it does ping then use up the tank and move up a grade.

I had an 1989 ford ranger that would ping at low octane but with a blend of about 60% cheap and 40% mid grade it ran just fine.

The ping is detonation. Lower octane detonates more easily than higher octane. Using higher octane than what prevents pinging is a waste of money.

I am going to assume that we are talking about the inline 4 liter. At sea level 87 octane should work fine. The later 4 liters did not have the knock sensor, so if it knocks you can go to 89 octane. Do not use more octane than is necessary or you will LOSE HP and mileage due to the higher octane burning slower.
Good Luck

Your Jeep GC will run just fine on 87 octane fuel. I own a 96 GC and that's all I've ever used in it, and it runs just fine without any problems.
