The same way we know human beings didn't just pop out of some goo.
Ideas (well, memes) are subject to the same forces of natural selection as genes are.
Religions weren't invented the way JRR Tolkein invented Middle Earth. Spiritual thoughts and worldviews evolved in time into the religions we have today.

Because the holybook of my religion is way too complicated to be made by some random human. And the fact it was made millions of years a go, just add strength to my belief.
Some facts written in the holybook might be irrational for primitive people, and current sci and tech discoveries prove it just in the modern age. Nobody could write these facts unless there was a time machine, and rational human would say there is no time machine, therefore, there must be something with great power behind all these, and it must be God.
just to give one example. Years a go, doctors are trying to find out whether the development of babies in a woman womb started by growth of the flesh first and then the bones, or the bones first and then covered with flesh. With technology, they discovered that it was bone first and then covered with flesh.....
............................................And this fact was written in Quran million of years ago when people didnt have the technology.
this is just one example among thousands, for more examples, google "Harun Yahya".
Many statements in Quran might still sounds irrational, but people in 10,000 years in the future might prove it right and call us primitive.

At first Gods were indeed created by random people, the first religions were polytheistic in nature to explain natural whether phenomena. Monotheistic religions, or our contemporary "God" archetypes are relatively new to the scene.
Mysheildisgod-I'm sorry, but that is the most funny post I have ever seen. I'm not even trying to be mean.

Think about the type of God pretty much all monotheistic (one god) religions believe in. Now at least in christianity he is a loving, caring, compassionate God. But many atheists say that the idea of God was created from "wishful thinking". Let me ask you, do you think someone would wish God to be a God that punishes? Would someone wishfully think of a God that sends you to Hell if you don't follow him? If someone created the idea of God then they also created the idea of "sin". Would someone wish there to be a God that holds you accountable for all the "sins" you commit in your life?
Also, just because someone wishes for something to be real doesn't make it not true. If I had a wife, I would wish that she remain faithful to me. Just because I wish that she remains faithful doesn't automatically make it not true and imply that she is in fact cheating on me whenever she gets a chance.
There is no desire that we are born with that cannot truely somehow be fulfilled: i.e. desires for food, sex, knowledge, health, love from others, money, and so on and so on... now apply that to the desire for God that has been in humanity as far back as we can historically observe. Maybe there's a reason that desire is put into us, because it can be a truely filled desire possibly?

The only random person that could have kept believers willing to die horrible deaths for thousands of years would have been so All Powerful, All Knowing, that it would have had to be like a god or can you just accept that it was, is and ever shall be.....GOD

the tought has crossed my mind. but i guess u just have to have faith and trust that there is a higher being in the world that looks over you when things are good OR bad.. and not only think of him and expect things from him when ur in a tough situation... ultimately its FAITH.. yes maybe he was made up by a random person...maybe he wasnt.. we will never know all we can do is believe in whichever god we choose to believe in

God was "made up" by the educated clergy and royalty in their own image and likeness, with their personal bias on how other be and what "rules" they should follow.
