well, reality is often hard to accept. for some folks it's hard to accept that they're just one of billions of other puny humans running around on a tiny dirt ball spinning in a limitless void so folks find reasons to feel special ... like an omnipotent super being loves them and pays attention to every thought and movement they make throughout their short and mundane lives.

War, pestilence, plague, the fact that youth is wasted on the young (thanks, this answer should make 5000 points, I hope it doesn't get deleted) the fact of the matter is, age isn't a handicap, and experience isn't a distraction. Talk to old people, they know more than people think.

It is complicated and full of ambiguity, and that scares them. They want everything simple (black-white / good-evil), and they want someone to tell them what everything means (and to tell them that there is meaning).
