women had little meaning in the bible. Wait until you read about the law of rape. Or some of the other things. I know far too much about it from reading the acts that have happened in the bible. Too bad so many women are still treated this way by males thinking its alright becasue the bible says so.

FAQ: What books are in the Word and what are apocrypha?

"The books of the Word are all those which have the internal sense; but those books which have not the internal sense, are not the Word. The books of the Word, in the Old Testament, are the five Books of Moses, the Book of Joshua, the Book of Judges, the two Books of Samuel, the two Books of Kings, the Psalms of David, the Prophets Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, Daniel, Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi: and in the New Testament, the four Evangelists, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John; and the Apocalypse. The rest have not the internal sense" (Arcana Coelestia n. 10325 or Heavenly Doctrine n. 266).

FAQ: Why different testaments and books in the Word?

"As regards the Word particularly, it has existed in every age, though not the Word we possess at the present day. Another Word existed in the Most Ancient Church before the Flood, and yet another Word in the Ancient Church after the Flood. Then came the Word written through Moses and the Prophets in the Jewish Church, and finally the Word written through the Evangelists in the new Church. The reason why the Word has existed in every age is that by means of the Word there is a communication between heaven and earth, and also that the Word deals with goodness and truth, by which a person is enabled to live in eternal happiness. In the internal sense therefore the Lord alone is the subject, for all goodness and truth are derived from Him" (Arcana Coelestia n. 2895).

That story simply can't be understood in isolation. Yes, it is horrible. The levite was an idiot. Not only did he not recognize his part in the death of his concubine, but he chose the most horrifying way to publicize it. The subsequent chain of results led to the near extinction of one of the tribes of Israel, and the solution to THAT problem was even WORSE! What's going on in this wreched "holy book"?

There is a verse repeated several times in Judges: "At that time there was no king in the land and everyone did what he thought was right." At first it sounds like they did all right without a king, just living life, with God and an occasional judge to handle the crises. But as the book progresses, the judges make poorer and poorer decisions, leading to the conclusion that maybe a king would be a good idea after all. And as it turns out, the very next book is 1 Samuel, describing the selection of the first king of Israel.

So Judges is a setup, propaganda for a change of government. The events described are not models for behavior but cautionary tales against theistic anarchy. I can see how people could get confused.

I think your first misconception is that everything in the Bible is supposed to reflect God (That being said, you will be shocked to learn there are plenty of vile and disturbing stories throughout the Bible, especially the Old Testament). In this story, I believe the Bible is demonstrating the degree of sin and monstrosity mankind is capable. Indeed, the entire Old Testament paints this sad picture of human beings which segways nicely into the New Testament which is God's solution to mankind's sin (i.e. Jesus Christ's sacrifice).

As a little side note to this point, it is interesting to notice how gruesome the "sin sacrifice" that God commanded the Israelites to carry out when they sin is. It is bloody, it is disgusting, it is vile. It is a physical representation of how God feels about our sin.

Now, your main question basically boils down to, why would God allow mankind to commit such vile sins? Why doesn't he just swoop down and save the concubine? It is because God created humans with FREE WILL. He did not want robots that have no choice but to love him and obey him. He wanted creatures that WERE LIKE HIM or "made in his image" as the Bible calls it. That is it say, since God has free will/sovereignty, he wanted his creation to also have free will, TO A CERTAIN DEGREE. Yes, God has and can intervene physically with our lives, but I believe he would rather we come to our own end results, as painful as it may be along the way.

Now the reason for THIS is because if his creatures, with free will, decided to love God EVEN THOUGH THEY HAD THE ABILITY TO HATE HIM, the love becomes even more meaningful.

Feel free to disagree.

Hard question.

Does it say this is God's will? Does it say God told him to cut up the person? (shudder)

Or that he just did it?

Lots of things happened and are reported, as facts and not as "God's will."

Some of the other things like how they treated women, are hard for us to understand.

The way I see it, is the women back then were thought of as property, kind of like black slaves were, in the U.S. at one time. Not right, but it is what they did.

Possibly the women were "given" or offered to the men, as wives? I am not sure of this, though.

Some cultures today do the same thing.

How is it possible that God allowed it?
The same way God allows all of us to choose what we do, even today. A person has free will, to choose to rob a bank or do whatever, even though it is not God's will.

If we don't have the attitude like Jesus "not my will but God's will be done" then these horrible things will continue.

This may not be the best explanation, but it is the only one I have right now.

:)

The priest agreed with you! It was a heinous crime.

First, she was already dead, which is why he was making a point.

God also pronounced a curse on the blood line of the tribe that did it and ultimately they will answer on judgment day.

It is a record of a historical event, done not by believers, but those who defied and rejected God. The point is that a nation which has turned it's back on morality and truth is capable of any heinous crime in the name of self-gratification.

Those people are no different than the people today committing attrocities in Darfur.

God will judge and punish all those who love darkness and sin rather than light and life.

Its truly amazing how you can take a scripture out of context and make it believable to you and try to have everyone believe what you read into the script.
Judges 20:23 " And the man, the master of the house, went out unto them, and said unto them, Nay, my brethern, nay, I pray you, do not so wickedly; seeing that this man is come into mine house, do not do this folly."
V.24 " Behold here is my daughter a maiden, and his concubine; them Iwill bring out now, and humble ye with them what seemeth good unto you; but unto this man do not so vile a thing "

NOW I ask you exactly what do you suppose was " such a vile thing :?
The man offered his daughter plus his vistors concubine to a bunch of drunk unruly MEN who wanted to have SEX with the man.
I suggest you read the scripture WELL before you try to make unfounded assumptions, please!

As to the other scripture your referring too, hmm lets see! Woops your wrong again, what can I say.

Judges 20:28-29) And he said unto her, " up, and let us be going. " But none answered. Then the man took her up upon an ***, and the man rose up, and gat him unto his place.
(V.29) And when he came into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold of his concubine, and divided her, together with her bones, into twelve pieces, and sent her into all the coasts of Israel."

Now this scripture means that after spending the night at this man's place, he got up in the morning to be on his way only to discover that his concubine ( who he had gone to so much trouble retrieving her back from her father, the reason why they were travelling in the first place) had been brutally raped and murdered.
So he gathered her up, went back to his home where he proceeded to cut her body up to send to all areas in Israel. He did this to bring justice to whoever murdered her. He wanted to find out who would do such a thing. And he also wanted to let everyone know that a vile and outrageous crime had beem committed.

So have you anything alse you'd like to clear up or might I suggest that you sit down and try to come to some understanding of the scriptures. It is a well known fact that just by daily reading and studying God's word, God will open your eyes to a better understanding!

Furthermore, I might add that the people in the First century lived and acted the same way we do in the tweny first century. Honestly, can you say the people living today are any different then the people of that day? I say not!!

I have always thought that the Bible was a bit sexists. There is a lot of good things about women but all the good does not make up for the bad. Yes, the Bible is a very violent book. But there is a lot of beauty in it too.

Nothing has happen in this world that is not common to man.

Because of the sin of man God allows man to make a choice, contrary to what atheist believe. These are the consequences. The word of God is ugly....you say,but to show the world that God knew, he lift the scriptures to prove a point that man was and is still evil......and capable of these same sins.......

God is not ugly, people are.

the bible faithfully records the evil men do, that does not mean that god approves of it.

No one gets away with anything.

Sin is always paid for.

Either people receive the payment Jesus made on their behalf or they pay for their sins themselves throughout eternity.

Everyone will face a personal judgment before God and everyone will eventually end up before Him.

A Hitler can live an entire lifetime and seem to easily escape judgment in this life, but death does not end existence.

Hebrews 9:27
And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment
