Not to be hostile to first poster.. but DNA testing is closely related to ancestry, but it is NOT genealogy. It is a variation or new twist to ways of finding about your background.
Genealogy in strict terms is (methodically) locating, identifying and documenting your specific ancestors. Meaning.. by name, relationship, etc.
Surnames are also very similiar, in that it can be part of studying your background. It is not as reliable since there is no "method" or proof involved. DNA is very scientific, and gives (as mentioned) a broad view of your genetic background.
All of these fall into a wider category of researching personal history. However, each is distinctive, and serves different purposes. Someone who has had DNA testing, has not sat down and learned exactly who their gr grandparents were, and the details of their lives. Not everyone chooses to do that, anyway!

Although DNA testing to establish distant ancestry is pretty expensive, a brother and sister might split up the cost of taking tests for paternal and maternal ancestry:
http://www.dnancestoryproject.com/ydna_intro_howto.php
Genetic testing is sometimes necessary
---To discover if a parent is likely to pass on a particular genetic disease, such as Tay Sachs or Cystic Fibrosis;
---To establish the paternity of a child;
---To establish, later in life, the percentage chance that someone might have inherited a dreaded partially genetically-caused disease, such as Alzheimer's.
However to merely satisfy curiosity about one's ethnic background, unless the cost of these DNA tests decreases considerably, they seem a rather frivolous indulgence.

Autosomal DNA. You get it 50-50 from both parents and it is most of your DNA.
Also it is the only type of DNA that can prove paternity for a girl.
Y DNA is passed from father to son only.
Mitochondrial DNA is passed from the mother to both her sons and daughters, but only the daughters pass it on to their children.

I don't know what the test was, but this is almost certainly genealogy.
