You should tell them the benefits of a cell phone first:
Tell them that it is a great way to keep in touch with you and for emergencies. There are also plans where they can know who you call each day. OR.. you can get a cingular go phone were u can recharge the amount of money in your account... so u can use your own money to fill up your account instead of nagging your parents and they will be able to know how much your use your cell phone.

If you do get a cell phone, do not use it too much... but use it enough.

If you use it too much, they will think that u only wanted a cell to call your friends.
If you dont use it enough, then they will think that there was no point. So be careful!

You won't be able to convince them. Sorry--if you're only 13 they're not going to listen to you.

However, I can tell you what led me to get a cell for my 13 year old son. The local high school was locked down for the better part of a day due to a student leaving death threats against other students. No one was allowed in, no one was allowed out. For a while, the only way students could let their parents know they were ok was by calling them or texting them on their cell phones. That same night, my son's middle school received a bomb threat and all evening activities including a band concert were cancelled. He took a cell phone to school the next day, and has had one with him ever since. He knows that if something like that happens, to please call me (as soon as its safe) and please let me know that he's ok.

17 is such a late age to get a cell phone. I got my first cell in 5th grade lol. Well, I told my mom that i would be responsible and that i would need it to call her to let her know i'd be at a friends house or that i'd like a better way to communicate with my friends. I suggest you pay for it too.

Get a job and pay for your own phone. You can get a cheap, prepaid mobile for about $10 a month.

Well, I know you're not going to give me a best answer for this but you know, I don't really care. I think before you keep saying you want a cell, you should read these articles about how the radiation affects your brain...... I have 3 teens (14, 15, 17) and they stopped asking for a cell after reading these articles.

If you're too young to get a job, you definitely don't need a cell phone.

Oh spare me. If you want a phone, get a part time job and tell them you will pay the bills.

Be carefull they go up super fast!!
Do try and use it just for real emergencies.

Tell them that it's a great way for them to keep track of you and you to be able to get in touch with them if something goes wrong!

your prolly too young to own one, besides it could be quite expensive to own and operate one and unless you are earning your own $$ your parents don't believe you need one now. Most of us never owned one till we started earning our own $$
