They are not. Whatever "Global Warming" is occurring is the result of solar activity and natural cycles. Therefore, if every single light bulb were changed to fluorescent it would not make a single bit of difference to the earth's temperature.
But here is a very good example of what kind of damage we can cause by simply "doing something" before we know weather or not any of our normal activities are causing a problem.
Environmentally speaking, fluorescent lights have a far more negative impact on the environment than incandescent bulbs. For one thing, it takes more energy to manufacture them. They also contain toxic mercury vapor. Proper disposal also requires more energy use. Their usefulness as environmentally friendly is dubious at best. Incandescent bulbs use less energy to manufacture, contain no toxic chemicals and disposal causes no negative impact.

They consume much less power (about 1/5) than regular light bulbs. The idea is that if we use less power, we won't have to build more power plants, presumed to be the source of the pollution. But a lot of that depends on whether your state uses a lot of polluting power sources, and to some degree, we all draw from the same national grid.

Well, I believe it helps by using less electrical energy which means less need for the production of electricity which means less strain on earths resources. But this, I would think, just appies to mother earth as a whole. Honestly, Im not really sure how it would affect global warming.

Because they use LESS electricity than other lightbulbs (saving oil & other natural resources), and they give off aLOT less heat (a "waste" product- that adds to G.W. in several different ways..).
