i went today and got a skin graft!!! ouch!!!!!!! well, not too bad i guess :)
my hubby thinks we got ripped off
(they took a teeny bit of my gum from the roof of my mouth and put it at my lower teeth's gum line.)
apparently my gums were too thin there and this needed to be done b4 i get my braces put on (i'm 21). i never heard of anyone eles having this done even though they said like 40 - 50 % of ppl (that may have meant older patients) that get braces have to have this done.
Any comments, stories of experience, ect. would be really helpful in reassuring myself and my husband that we didnt waste $760 (CND$)!! thanks

HELLO SUMMER,

I CAN UNDERSTAND YOUR SUPRISE, BUT REMEMBER THAT YOU ARE NOT PAYING FOR WHAT THEY DO, BUT ALSO FOR THEIR KNOWLEDGE TO DO IT CORRECTLY. YOU MAY MAVE HAD A GENERAL DENTIST WITH TRAINING ALSO DO THE SAME THING, BUT REMEMBER THE PERIODONTIST DOES ONLY GUMS AND HE'S THE SPECIALIST IN THESE PROCEDURES. $750 (CAN) SOUNDS ABOUT WHAT WE CHARGE IN $ (US).

well he probably did it because the braces cut your gums. It cut my gums when i had the metal in my mouth. As you grow older your body regenerate slower. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to tell you that. When i went to a periodontist I had to go for a bacterial infection on my upper palette. The price to put some anti biotic and to clean the infected area and clear it cost roughly 400 United States dollars if i can remember. So dont feel too bad. Any specialist can be pricey. Give them the benefit of the doubt.

I'm getting the same thing done later this year. I've been brushing too hard and caused my gums to recede. My dentist referred me to their periodontist to have the grafting done. I've had 2 friends do the same thing. Also due to brushing too hard. I heard it's really good. The grafted area should be stronger and less prone to receding. My doctor said a lot of ppl do this procedure. Due to gum disease or improper brushing. Esp w/electric toothbrushes so popular now. Brushing way too hard. The price sounds about right. =)
