I'm not being a smart***, I actually watched a church being torn down tonight on my way home from work. I'm not a church person, but I thought it a shame they had to tear down such a beautiful piece of architecture. It's the most beautiful building in town, why couldn't they tear down one of the plentiful ugly ones instead? Am I alone in thinking demolition can be a moving experience? I mean watching the structure falling and crumbling on itself and crashing to the pavement, with the dust getting in my eyes and the water from the firehose misting and hitting my face. Not to mention the bat flying through the night sky after narrowly escaping the wrecking ball, or the people on the corner holding vigil with their candles.

We are all diminished when a beautiful piece of the past is destroyed.

Yes. And I found it very sad. The building could've housed another church, but some of the local developers thought it wasn't "modern" enough and had it demolished to put up some ugly cookie-cutter apartments that look just like all the other apartments in that area now. It was a beautiful old church.

Why did they tear it down? Yes I have seen some beautiful buildings(never a church tho) destroyed all so they could put in a mall.

Sad thing, but things forever change...nothing stays the same.
In our current world a lot of people would have been glad to see such a sight. Thats the saddest thing. Since it moved you so it just means you care!! :)

Yeah - sad. Not because it was a church, but because it was a beautiful building. Don't they have a Heritage Society or something in your town that helps preserve old buildings???

They tore down a church in my town that was built in 1903. They tore it down to make way for a Hardee's. The Hardee's never got built and the land is still vacant. That was almost 20 years ago.

Kind of a awww moment. But a church building is just that. A building. A church is the people. We are the church.

Yup, when I was young, I saw our old chapel demolished to make way for a bigger church. It was worth it because our church is so beautiful today.

Churches remind me of masses of mindless, obedient zombies congregating to recite the same vapid drivel week after week. They are a reminder of how our primitive, ignorant ancestors believed that raising monuments to praise and worship invisible sky fairies would somehow affect their lives. The sooner they are all razed, the better (beautiful architecture non-withstanding.)
