Just want to hear from anyone who has had surgery that can tell me the feeling right when your going out, can you describe it? I am super nervous to get surgery and have been put under anesthesia once before when I was 6 years old, and I remember it feeling like your fading away, very scary. Help!

It feels like nothing. He told me to count backward from 100. I got to 98 and it was lights out. I didn't feel woozy or like I was falling asleep. I was just out like someone flipped a switch. Good luck.

General anesthesia is a very scary thing, especially if you are not familiar with the mechanics of it. There really is nothing to be scared about though. They will give you a preoperative medication first, like Valium or Versed and Demerol. That will take a lot of the anxiety away. Once they get you on the OR table the Anesthesiologist will tell you everything they are going to do and exactly how you will feel. It's just like floating and going to sleep. They will inject the sodium pentothal into your IV and you might get a little garlic taste in your mouth. They will tell you to count backwards from 10 and if you make it to 8 before you are out you are a superhero. Anesthesia is very safe these days. Don't worry for a second. You will be well taken care of and monitored the entire time and when your surgery is over they will give you some medication to reverse the anesthesia and you are on your road to recovery. All the best to you. Don't worry!

Speaking from experience:

Last May I broke both of my forearms in a trampoline incident. I didn't have to go through worrying about the pain of an IV injection at the hospital because I was yelling at the paramedics to stick the damn line in my arm to give me morphine, lol. But anyway, once we got to the hospital they injected what I assumed to be the "IV" part of the anesthesia. They injected it about a minute before I was wheeled into the surgery room, and by the time I was in the surgery room, I was on cloud nine, lol. Everything was spinning, but in a good way. I didn't feel any pain anymore, anyway. Then as the anesthesiologist was about to start up the gas part of it, I asked him how long it would take. He said no more than 15 seconds for me to be completely out, then told me to count backwards from 10 and put the mask on my face. I don't remember getting to 8. When I actually "woke up," I remembered waking up very briefly in the recovery room and asking my mom a question, I don't remember what. The time between the anesthesia and me waking up completely, even with the brief wake-up in recovery seemed like a matter of seconds, even though it was close to 8 hours. So in general, I wouldn't be worried about it. Though, especially if they use narcotics for pain, expect a VERY VERY dry mouth when you wake up. The first thing I did was push the Nurse's Station button and ask for a really big glass of water. (I fell back asleep before it got there, the drugs from the anesthesia stay in your body for a few hours, so expect to be sleepy too.) Sorry for a long reply, but stories are fun.

>> It is a little scary to think about it ahead of time, but the few times I have had the anesthesia, I could not feel a thing. Some people say they can feel a mild burning sensation when the anesthesia starts going through their veins. You just start counting backwards and before you know it, you are out. In fact this last surgery, I could not wait to get the anesthesia going because I knew that by the time I was aware of anything again would be after everything was done. To me, it is more difficult waiting for them to start administering it. Some people do get sick afterwards; I never have. Hope you are having a minor surgery and that everything is ok. If you are a praying person, I suggest praying to calm yourself as you wait. It sure helped me. God Bless.

What kind of anesthesia?

The way they put you out for wisdom teeth and for surgery is usually different - for wisdom teeth they use versed/fentanyl and if you're in the OR it's usually general anesthesia.

I had general anesthesia once, and it was just fine. It's all a little foggy from when I got into the gurney to go the OR, and I remember my doctor looking funny in scrubs and a mask, and telling me I was going to go to sleep. I can't remember if they put a mask over my face or just put me out with the IV, but I don't remember being frightened. Waking up was good, too - just felt really tired, but not too drugged out; half an hour later I felt normal.
Good luck with your surgery!

Last time I was put under anesthesia, I was getting my wisdom teeth out. Most of my friends talk about how funny they feel and how much fun it is to feel a little "goofy". But when I was under anesthesia for the surgery, I didn't even remember arriving at the hospital. So some people react very differently.

Most likely you can expect a sleepy/goofy/happy/relaxing experience

But don't worry, I'm sure you under good care

Hope this helped! :]

In my experience...I remember them saying that I would be out in a few seconds...I woke up an hour later and remembered nothing. It hurt a little, as it was injected into my IV...but I was out so fast I didn't even have time to say ow. No worries, though. You'll just pass out and get some great sleep.

I didn't feel like I was fading away. One minute I was awake and the next I didn't. What was scary was waking up and being all confused. I told the nurse I wanted her to go get my dad...he lives 12 hours away. I also told her I wanted to call my son...he was 5 months old.

It's nothing. They put an injection of drugs into your IV tube and the next thing you know, you're waking up and it's all done.
