Depending on the state, I know in Nebraska you sell a car and you take the license with you and put it in you new car, but in Texas you sell a car and the license stays in the car.

Old owner keeps the plates. Turn them in to DMV or DPS as the new owner will likely rack up violations and with the plate being registered to the previous owner, guess who's stuck for the fines? By the way, you should also remove the State tag on the windshield and the Inspection Sticker as well, for the same reason.

WHile the plates are registered TO the car, they are also registered IN an owners name, so when the owner's sell, the old owner needs the old plates so he doesn't get the ticket if the new owner goes speeding. Kapish? The new owner needs to get his/her own plates for the vehicle.

When you get a license plate it is attached to the person not the vehicle. You would never get the previous owners plate with the car you buy.

Well, for customized license plates (as I have) you are able to switch those from vehicle to vehicle, also you keep them if selling your car. But for standard plates I'm not so sure. Ask your local court house for details.

When you sell a car you are suppose to turn in the licence plate to the DMV or when you buy a car you go to the DMV to get a new licence plate.

it depends on the state. here in nj we must keep our tags and turn them into the local dmv. if we dont they will catch up to us and suspend our license. i would call your local division of motor vehicles or your police dept.
