"The bulldog is a relatively small but stocky breed, with a compact body and short, sturdy limbs. Its shape results in a waddle-like gait. Bulldogs are known for their short muzzles and the saggy skin on their faces, creating the apparent "frown" that has become a trademark of the breed. Bulldogs come in a variety of colors and ideally have a smooth, short coat. The size for a mature male is about 50 pounds (25 kg); that for mature females is about 40 pounds (23.7 kg)."

"The American Bulldog is a stocky, strong-looking dog. Its coat is short and either white or white with patches. The Johnson type is a larger dog with a shorter muzzle than the Scott type. However, many modern American Bulldogs are a combination of the two types. In general, American Bulldogs weigh between 27 to 57 kg (60 to 125 lb) and are 52 to 70 cm (20 to 28 in) at the withers."

If you want to see pictures, just click on bulldog, and you will see pictures of english bulldogs, they are the ones with the lower jaw sticking out and the teeth protruding. They are stocky built and really great dogs! My daughter bought one last March, and I babysit the dog with my German Shepherd every day. The dog is already 30 pounds and only 41/2 months old! Her mother was 55 pounds which is big for a bulldog. Now the American bulldog is much larger and has a long thin tail I prefer the English bulldog myself, they have the sweetest dispositions and they are not mixed with the pit bull breed. The american bulldog is part mastif, part english, and part pit. They do have good pictures if you just type the breeds name and hit search. Hope you find the one you like best!

I have 2 english bulldogs. Yes they are the short stocky ones. American bulldogs are similar in there facial feathures but are much taller and thinner and dont have as saggy of faces. They have totally different personality traits as well. An american bulldog is very much like your average lab or rotweiler, as where an english bulldog is very lazy, cant run fast and gets out of breath very easily.

The American Bulldog derived from the English Bulldog but they have 2 completely different looks because they were bred for different things. The original bulldogs of early 19th-century England were bred for bullbaiting and dogfighting and were ferocious and tenacious, but beginning in the 1830s, by which time these inhumane sports were illegal, bulldogs were bred to be gentle. Derived from English bulldog stock, the American bulldog originated in the United States in the 18th century. Traditionally, this breed has been used for working cattle and hogs and as a watchdog
