I have a standard poodle that can unlatch the backyard gate. Many times I yell at her not to do this, but yet she does. I just went back to check on her and sure enough she was loose. Not a minute later I see her laying on the side of road kind fo sleeping. I don't see any blood but she seems really tired. Maybe shes been running a lot? Should I really call a vet?

You have got to be freaing kidding.

Just in case you are not, get your lazy rear outside, load your critically injured dog into the car and get it to the nearest hopsital.

And if she survives perhaps a trip to the Home Depot for a miraculous new invention called a LOCK would be in order.

But you already knew that, right?

Yes, you should take her to the vet. It sounds like she got tapped by a car. And after you're finished there, get a better latch for your back gate, maybe with a lock on it. Just because you yell at her not to unlatch the gate doesn't mean she's not going to do it. Dogs don't understand that. It's up to you to make sure your yard is secure enough to keep her in, and if you can't do that, then you should get her a kennel enclosure or a tie-out lead, because next time you find her by the road, she will probably be dead. And it won't be her fault.

Take her to the vet NOW. No normal dog is going to just be lying on the side of the road "kind of sleeping." She most likely got hit by a car and may have internal injuries that you can't see which may be life-threatening. Then put a lock on that gate. If she opened the gate one time and you knew she could do it, you have been totally irresponsible not to do something before now. Yelling at a dog one time or many times is useless--you have a responsibility to act, not yell. For the price of a $2 lock you may have just cost your dog her life.

Obviously your poodle is smarter than you are.

No dog just lays by the side of the road 'kind of sleeping.' What kind of stupid fool are you??

The minute you found your dog laying by the side of a road 'kind of sleeping' you should have picked her up, raced her to your car, and raced your large lazy rear end to the EMERGENCY CLINIC ASAP.

What were you thinking?? Did it ever occur to you that she was unconscious??? Internal bleeding?? Smashed ribs??

Geeze! If you had enough brains to turn on a computer, get on the internet, and make this dumber than anything post... then you should have enough brains to install a LOCK on that gate.

Poodles are notoriously smart. Opening gates is NOTHING. Geeze. Half my poodles could do that at 8 weeks old. Yelling at the dog solves nothing except to make her WANT to open that gate to get away from your stupid self.

i would call or go to the vet just in case! my silky is very active and she gets a chance to run around like crazy but when she is tired she never curls up next to the road or park and sleeps! she runs back to the car and waits to fall asleep in her carrier! be safe than sorry!

She may have internal injuries. Check her to see if she seems to be in opain anywhere. If she is unconscious, take her to the vet right away. Really that is most likely what you should do anyway. Hope she is okay.

take her to the vets immediatly. She may have internal bleeeding which is very hard to detect.
Don't wait until tomorrow or tomorrow may be to late.
do not feed or water her. if she is injured and the vet has to do surgery you don't want her to choke on the anehtesia.
Good Luck
