The commandment is, "Thou shalt not 'murder!'" Meaning you should not just go kill someone for the sake of simply killing.

With this, God has made provision for defending your family and loved ones even if it means the taking of the offender's life.

If it's only a hearsay, perhaps you should observe if they really have the intentions but in the act of killing your family it is not wrong to depend them. If you cannot, then ask for help from those who will uphold the law.
Police of course will not act if there is no sufficient evidence to the plan of killing your family. The irony is that they still have to see the actual event before they can help you. You can ask for police protection if you have the means or money to afford that.
If you have sufficient time, maybe sending your family to where it will be safer is good until you are able to solve the matter.

It's not wrong to defend your family, even if you have to kill the attacker. You should of course try to immobilize or injure him, but if that doesn't work, it is ok to take his life.

The commandment says "Thou Shalt Not Murder." It does not prohibit killing for just reasons.

it's argued as self defense, but it's better to be safe than sorry. think about it: even if they were a murderer, they still have people who will be emotionally in dispair if they die.

alternatives? non-fatal injury, unconsciousness, holding until the police come to arrest him, tie them up outside the police station like your friendly neighbourhood spider-man would, or I guess scare them (they pull out a knife, you take there's, ask them to leave, while holding the knife). they're risky though.

It depends. In America, you should seek protection from law enforcement. If you are in an immediate situation, though, I'd say you can always protect them yourself if at all possible, whether that means killing them or whatever.
