Like when people call upon the power of Jesus and hit you with some kind of invisible energy force shooting out from their hands? In the name of Jesus, I............

No - "In Jesus' name" is really a blasphemy and the other poster already provided the Biblical verses proving that the Lord would ignore those who blatantly use his name for any ill-gotten gains.

Christians are recommended, in the Bible (which we believe to be God's Word and therefore a source of authority), to ask for things, in prayer, using the name of Jesus, and that's the way you will usually hear that phrase.
But I would guess you have heard of someone using the phrase to address a situation where it was thought that there would be danger from evil spirits. I have heard an anecdote from a man who states that he was formerly involved with Satan worship. He personally experienced something that felt like "some kind of invisible energy force", as you said, when a Christian approached him and, using the name of Jesus, rebuked him for the evil things he was doing.
As a Christian, I would suspect that what this man felt was the effects of an angel intervening to protect the Christian accuser from harm. He just didn't happen to see the angel.
The phrase does not "contain" power, like it's a magic spell, but when spoken by a Christian who is actually asking Jesus to intervene in the situation, powerful things may result from its use.

only if you really believe. If not, it can be dangerous (Acts 19:14). If the name of Jesus contains no power, then how come Americans take it in vain so often, and not Allah, or Buddha, or anyone else, even when they aren't even nominally Christians? I did hear about a guy in China who was a Buddhist monk. He wanted to put a spell on people who were trying to convert to Christianity. One Christian walked up to him and quietly said, "I bind you in the name of Jesus," and the guy froze, could not move anything, until the altar call was over. My sister also caused a weegee board not to work when she was reading her Bible and praying with a friend in another room while her worldly friends were trying to use the weegee board. Really it was God who caused it not to work, but my sister had a part in it too because she was there. Usually we heal in His name though, not hurt people. That is, those who truly believe, not just anyone who calls himself or herself a Christian.

No, we didn't just invent that idea or make it up... anyone who says we did doesn't know their Bible well.

It's an instruction from Jesus Himself. It's in John's Gospel, chapter 16, verses 23-24:

"In that day you will no longer ask me anything. I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete."

I don't where you get the "invisible energy force" thing -- been watching some really weird movies, I guess. We don't believe that.

The way to the Father is by the son.

GOD gave Jesus his power to use. Jesus gives it to us when we need it.

Example of Christs power. I smoked for 25 years. Tried to quit every way I could. One night at roughly 2:30 am I had a beautiful vision of Jesus and heard his soft voice say,"Dawn, I am going to give you the power to quit smoking."

Everything else just came with it. I just knew that when I felt weak all I needed to do is ask Christ for his power to keep me from smoking.

This was last January and I am smoke free.

Yes, the Holy Name of Jesus is VERY powerful....but one must also have faith in that power. The Devil himself knows the Name of Jesus....and trembles....

"Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, "In the name of Jesus, whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out." 14Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. 15(One day) the evil spirit answered them, "Jesus I know, and I know about Paul, but who are you?" 16Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding (Acts 19:13-16).

LK 10:17 -- The seventy-two returned with joy and said, "Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name."

JN 14:13-14 -- I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. 14You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it".

JN 1:12 -- to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God

JN 3:18 -- whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son

JN 15:16 -- the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.

JN 16:23 -- I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.

saying, “in Jesus’ name” isn't a magic formula. if what you asked for/said in prayer was not for God’s glory and according to his will, saying “in Jesus’ name” is meaningless. genuinely praying in Jesus' name and for his glory is what is important, not attaching certain words to the end of a prayer. it isn't the words in the prayer that matter, but the purpose behind the prayer

it's not some wierd magic, just words have a significance. when you line up with God's will and speak it, then it shall be done. God doesn't break promises or abandone anything He started. so if you declare something in Jesus' name, according to His will, it shall be done cuz you're saying "God's got my back on this one", and He does

Funny thing, I saw this on TV...some preacher said those exact words, while smacking a person on the head and voila! suddenly that person, who was allegedly possessed by some demon, was no longer possessed! Must have been a miracle?
