South America is mostly Roman Catholic. The RC allows prayer to all dead saints. Mary is just the most popular.

Pastor Billy says: first off, the Trinity doctrine is Catholic in origin and Mary is not part of the Trinity hence Catholics do not give Godly worship to Mary as that would be heresy and grounds for excommunication. Secondly there are many schismatics who combine Roman Catholic teaching with African beliefs in the region, this is not Roman Catholicism get your aim straight. Thirdly the Christian bible(NT & OT) is a Catholic book when someone writes praying to saints isn't in it what they are really saying is "my tradition of interpretating the bible doesn't lead me to believe it is in it." Praying to saints or those in heaven already is in the bible and even praying for those who have passed on is in the bible ie. St. Paul for Onespherous.
BTW Martin Luther was big on Marian devotion, and to answer your question Mary appeared to another saint Juan Diego she is known in Central/South America as Our Lady of Guadolope'.

I don't understand where the Catholics came up with Mary as the person to intercede on our behalf. The Bible teaches us that Christ is the intermediary, but if you don't like it, don't become Catholic. I will however allow them to worship how, where and what they may and would expect others to do the same for me.
