How's his urine? If it's dark or bloody, get thee to a hospital.
Anyway, don't mess around with kidneys -- a quick test at the doc's should tell you if he's got a kidney problem. If it's not the kidneys, you can feel a great deal of relief, and work on the back pain part.
My doc diagnosed me with acidic urine -- I hadn't been drinking enough water, and I felt a strange ache in the back. When I started guzzling the liquids, I felt so much better. But that's MY diagnosis. Go get your own, OK?

That doesn't sound like the right place for kidney pain. I have a kidney disease and when I was first diagnosed, I was surprised to experience the pain so much higher in my back than I had expected. I get kidney pain about where my bottom ribs are.

If it's his kidneys then it would hurt towards the side, either left or right. Most back pain tends to be more centered. In any case he should go have it checked out in case it is something serious.

I couldn't just sit around and do nothing like my doctors suggested.
They didn't want me to do anything or to take herbs or herbal remedies, but I had to try something - they just wanted me to do dialysis!
This program allowed me to take control of my health. I went from Stage 4 to Stage 3 kidney disease.
It was easy to do and my BUN, creatinine and anemia are all in better ranges.

Whenever I have torso pains (back or front) I replay what I have done, activity wise, over the previous week. If there is no light bulb (Oh sh** I did help Jim move his furniture into the new house last week) then its time to call the doc
