Because in general they are boxy and somewhat heavy. If you want to improve gas mileage have a fresh tuneup w/an air and fuel filter, correct tire pressure, and no hard starts or speeding. That will help you a bit but overall that's about what a wrangler gets. It's still a great, dependable vehicle....Good Luck.

Well its basically a 4cyl truck it is lighter than a mustang. But has bad aerodynamics Also the wrangler is geared for offroad usage not for economy. Dude as far as 4x4's go 18-21 mpg is good. I dont think theres really much u can do to increase gas mileage. Try taking it easy keep it below 3000 rpms, maybe some air intake and exaust will help but not much. Josh untrue a 4cyl Jeep SE's curb weight is 3092LBs. Which is lighter than a mustang. While in comparasion a 2010 mustang weighs more 3533 lbs. So the 4cyl can move a wrangler just fine. The 4.0L is defintily stronger, and can move the weight better there is no question there. oh yeah one thing that hurts the wranglers mileage is that the front axle is always turning.

He is refering to a new jeep so tune-ups dont matter. but as said they are boxy and heavy, and now with the 4 cyl and v6 they are weaker engines causing less milage than what can be had. i have an 89 cherokee that gets 18 mpg on an engine with over 100k on it. why because the 4.0 has more power than the 4 cyl or the v6 and it is well maintained. for example i built a 82 monte carlo with a built 400 small block. now we know they are heavy boxy cars and with a heavy v8 ,and overdrive tranny it was worse. but i still got 20 mpg in it when i wasn't running it hard and that was city driving which was where most of my driving was done. i would imagine i would have got around 25 mpg or so on the hiway where i would actually use overdrive

The new JK 2007 Jeep Wranglers have a computer controlled break in period. The mileage will suck for a few thousand miles. Check the manual and you should see this called out. Performance is backed down as well. By 5000 miles it should be all cleared up.

I have a 98 TJ and I get over 20 MPG mixed driving (City/highway). But I am light footed, don't speed, and coast to stops rather than heavy breaking.

You must be referring to a new model jeep Wranger, cause the old wranglers had an inline 6 engine not a V6. My 88 Wrangler averaged 22MPG, but you have to remember they're made for offroad use, so they're geared lower, and there-by get lower gas mileage.

Because you're pushing a heavy brick wall down the road. Wranglers are very heavy for their size, almost 4500lbs, are generally geared lower, have a big, flat frontal area meaning 0 aerodynamics area and were never intended to be used as an economical commuter vehicle.

They were designed to slog thru mud, climb over rocks, dig thru sand, and go slow and steady in rough terrain, a task at which they quite good.

I don't know what six cylinder jeep you have been driving. But my 05 wrangler with a 6 speed transmission and a HO 4.0 with smoke anything and everything I have ran against.Maybe its just your driving that is the problem. But I will agree they suck in the gas mileage area.My baby only gets 16mpg.

Walkin' ain't crowded!
Get a bike if you're that into gas mileage.... IF you bought a Jeep because you thought it would get good mileage then...1 you didn't do your homework...2 don't know what Jeep is all about...3 should consider public transit, they go where you seem to want to go. commuting!

My 97 SE got 20 in town and 26 highway. I think it's got a lot to do with how you take care of them as well as how you drive them.
