Many people back then were extremely sexist. If you want even worse examples, check some of the Epistles. "Saint" Paul was an exceptionally cruel jerk who said outright that women are supposed to be submissive and inferior to men.

How does Mary the mother of Jesus "deserve" to be respected? The Catholic church made up a lot of dogma about her and declared it so. The truth is that she is not the savior. She's not the co-redemptrix (Jesus is the only redeemer who alone suffered for the atonement of sin), she's not the mediatrix (there is one God and one mediator between God and man- the Man Christ Jesus). She was a sinner in need of a savior like all of us. Yes, she was a woman of faith. Just like Abraham, and all of those mentioned in Hebrews chapter eleven. And the Bible shows her as such. Especially the book of Luke. But she's human and should not be worshipped. Catholicism says she was conceived sinless to bear the sinless Son of God. If Mary needed to be sinless to bear a sinless Son, then I guess Mary's parents had to be sinless, too, and their parents, and theirs... ad infinitum. Clearly, that's not the case. It's just one example of the twisted logic of the "mother church."

Mary M. was clearly a follower of Christ. And the Gospels paint her as nothing more or less. They show her faithfully at the cross, and reverently going to the tomb to care for Jesus' body. They do not, as you know, say she was a prostitute. It may be that her story got confused with the story of the woman caught in adultery. Or it may be that the Catholic church had some kind of agenda at some point in history- I am a Protestant, raised somewhat lapsed Catholic, and have a healthy skepticism of Catholicism.

And I would never refer to the Catholic church as "The Church." THE CHURCH is the body of believers that have ever lived on earth. Not the Roman Catholic Church.

The Catholic Church teaches a number of things about Mary that are not recorded in scriptures. For example, we know that she did not die but was assumed directly into heaven. We also have access to details about Mary's many apparitions over the centuries, in particular at Lourdes and at Fatima. I don't think very much is known about Mary Magdalene. I have heard it said that she was a prostitute but I have never seen any evidence or testimony that this is the case.

I do not think Mary deserves any more respect than Jesus gave her. He did not name her as a temple or a deity to be worshipped. She is the vessel in which God used to send us our savior, nothing more. Praying to Mary is incorrect, and those prayers will go unheard because she is dead and she cannot help you. My church does not teach that anyone is a prostitute, God is the only one who can judge. Whatever she was, Jesus forgave her for it so it does not matter to us. I think the reason the bible does not tell us much else about Mary, mother of Jesus, is so we would not worship her and make shrines and alters for her. The same reason God his Mose's body, so the people would not get lost in worshipping something that had no deity!

THe Virgin Mary is the "Immaculate Conception" meaning that God made her sinless in order to bear his Holy Son. Mary is the closest creature to Jesus and hears and intercedes for us and brings everything to her son, our LORD. The Catholic Church gives Mary the up most respect she deserves as the Mother of GOD! Catholic teaching states that Mary ascended to heaven with her body and soul!

Yes Mary gave birth to Jesus, No that doesn't make her God like. I think that God chouse Mary to do his work, just like Moses or David but there still just people.

Mary is to be respected as the earthly mother of Jesus, but she is not worthy of our worship or adoration. The Bible nowhere indicates that Mary can hear our prayers, or that she can mediate for us with God. Jesus is our only advocate and mediator in Heaven..Mary herself sets the example for us, directing her worship, adoration, and praise to God alone

She found favor in Gods eyes and was chosen to carry the Christ child, but she has nothing to do with the God head.

Jesus did not hold his mother any higher than anyone else. Why should we?

Matthew 12:46-50

While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him. Someone told him, "Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you."He replied to him, "Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?" Pointing to his disciples, he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother."
