I don't believe in god either, but I think we are all incredibly special. Just think about the odds of ever being born at all. If your mother had had a different meal the day you were conceived you may have never happened. The fact is the odds of being conceived at all are so astronomically low that we are all lucky to be alive. That being said, out of all the other animal species we are the ONLY species who have created culture and technology on such an advanced level. We are all lucky to have this one life. It is the only one we get. Which makes me value it more than if I thought there is an afterlife. I know that this isn't a practice run. I am not afraid of not existing anymore. To paraphrase Mark Twian "I didn't exist before I was conceived and it did not cause me any discomfort". I just want to be a good person and treat people right, becaus it is the right thing to do, and it is my only chance to do so. Hopefully I will make a good life for the people I love.

Your question sounds simple at first, until you add the second part.
I would say yes, that humans ARE important. But then you ask for concrete reasons why. That is not so easy to answer. Especially since you do not believe we are God's children.
So... maybe I should just bow to your superior wisdom and admit that you are right, that we have no more importance or significance than a colony of ants on my front lawn, which actually are more of a nuisance and annoyance than anything. Depressing thought! I think we need to feel that we are important to someone or some thing, hence the many religions of the world. Your view seems to lead to despondancy. At least, it does for me.
So maybe Atheists really should NOT knock religion, since they have nothing at all comforting to offer in it's place?
Not that I am much religious, but I do believe in an after-life, in a world to come. I am not certain about a loving God, who cares for us as his children, but I would love to believe that such is the case. And that we are not just bothersome piss-ants messing up someone's nice green lawn.

Well I don't know why your down on yourself? You have a very sweet spirit. God don't make junk. Not one person ever created was created out of a mistake. God has a purpose for every person who is unique all on their own. You are the only one who can accomplish what you were made for. The reason belief is so stressed all the time is because it's the one thing that stands in the way of our happiness. Do you think an all knowing God would do all of this because he is sadistic? How completely boring that would be. Evil destroys itself. Who wants to sit around and watch someone destroy them selves after they had put in so much work to create them, as well as die for them just so they could exist in the first place. If the creator did all of that then there is that one chance in a million you could be wrong. Believe on him who made you. Not every thing that glitters is gold. He loves you very much. He did die for you. Don't throw the free gift of eternal life back into his face and say no thankyou. That is where we are not that important. We only know in part. So lighten up on yourself and think that if Jesus never would have died for us then you wouldn't even be sitting here asking that question. Evil would have already destroyed mankind. Be blessed and believe on Jesus Christ of Nazareth. HE LOVES YOU!!

Stephen Hawkin once said in his studies of the Universe, "the Universe seems to have a beginning. If the Universe has a beginning then it would have a purpose"
If you dont believe in God then the Universe just decided to happen. Does the Universe have a brain to think what it wants to accomplish? I dont think so... it had to have a creator. If the Universe was created by a being we call God then what was his ultimate intention. All the animals and plants live and die in a set cycle. They do what is necessary to survive nothing more. the bible says... (i know you dont want to hear this but) if we dont believe in God or a creator then we are like the animals in a cycle. God created us in his image... what image was that? the one he chose to become himself. Those who believe in him understand him and he will keep for his pleasure to be able to live with him as he does.
The ones that dont he will toss away because they have become as spoiled fruit to him

first answer is great..
the truth is that no one understands this
i think that if we are here...there must be some reason..even if we dont understand it!
i do believe in God and i believe that He has a plan for each of us.
sure...we seem insignificant compared to the entire universe,,,but we are important.
just think...if no one thinks that we are important and that someday everything will come to nothing, then what will we acheive? nothing! everyone will just be selfish and only care about themselves. the planet will eventually be destroyed, and future generations will suffer
even if people dont believe in God, they should still look after each other and do good. two wrongs dont make a right. if we all loved each other, there would be no wars, no poverty, no hunger and alot less suffering. if you wont do it for God, do it for each other and for the good of others. help to preserve this planet for generations to come
its not fair that they should suffer because of our negligence!
God bless

Each of us, in our own small way, impacts greatly the lives of those around us. Like tossing a rock into a still pool of water, we create ripples which spread out across the globe. Without ever knowing why, or in what way, we affect every being on this planet. We are, after all, one big family. Each of us is a priceless gift, one to another.

Absolutely right. Humans are distinguished primarily by being hugely full of self-importance.
The best 'long run' view I've seen of the human race took the entire history of the universe as its stage:
"As the universe cooled, nuclear force reactions gave way to a phase of minor electrochemical reactions on the surface of warm matter."
That's us.

As small and insignificant as we are, we do matter to God. And that alone basically makes us one of the most important beings in the universe (that is, assuming that there are other life forms out there). and if it so happens that we are the only life forms in this vast universe, hand picked by God, then that only makes us even more special. If this is so, then if we don't matter..........tell me..............what does?

Which is why the FSM has the best answer. "I'd really rather you didn't go around telling people I talk to you. You're not that interesting. Get over yourself. And I told you to love your fellow man, can't you take a hint? "

I think that humans are just tiny little bits in the grand scheme of things..I think that if there is a god he has far bigger things to worry about or entertain him than humans.
