I am assuming you mean whether you should use one or not for your trip?
Advantages:
Faster preparations and less work for you
Lower costs when you use a tour
They can put a whole diverse package together that makes sense
You have someone to complain too when you have a problem
You have someone to blame if trip does not work out and sometimes you
can get partial refund. If you plan it you are stuck with your mistakes.
Travel agent works with all your likes and dislikes and plans accordingly
Easier to get insurance straight through trip
Notification of all travel deals
Disadvantages:
Higher cost, fee paid to agent
Sometimes they can talk you into what they want you to book
They can a do make mistakes
If you are planning a complicated trip, use the agents they can make it a breeze. Flying across the US, do it yourself and use the internet.

Advantages: they take the trouble and time out of having to set everything up. They also often know the best places and ways to get where you want, and in turn the most out of your money.
Disadvantages: Cost, they often cost a little bit more to use. After all they are in business to make money in addition to help you out.
I often don't use them as I actually like setting things up and doing all the research. However the few times I do, they are worth the money. The trick is when to and when not to use them...

Great Perks, Free Flights, See the world, etc, Lousy pay and long hours. Most flight attendants make less than 20K a year.
