The tones are pretty loud, and sound like a resonating tube. The pitch is mid range (like middle C +- 2 octaves). I'm pretty sure this is a sign I need to replace it, but anyone know what could cause this?

I think I figured it out. It is probably due to the rotating tray rubbing against the metal inside.
