Both Tai Chi and Kung Fu come from the Qi (chi) Gong tree. Qi Gong translates as "essential life force." Both of these styles are considered hard form of the same practice.

Kung Fu styles are based on animal elements. The styles that I am familiar with all have forms that mimic the attributes of the real or mythological creature.

Tai Chi seems to have developed from the harmonic internal balancing exercises in Qi Gong itself, which is practiced primarily for health and medicine. In recent years Tai Chi has evolved into a martial art, based on the same repetitive body motions, which are always balanced and focused.

It is not easy to directly translate the meaning of a word or phrase from Chinese to Western culture. In short, my answer would be no, Tai Chi is not a style of Kung Fu, as it is defined in the West.

Kung Fu is a Chinese word that means "A physical skill mastered after years of hard practice" it could be applied to any physical skill whether martial arts, dancing, drawing or even cooking. This is the reason why the Chinese people today prefer to call their martial arts Wu Shu which specifically refers to the fighting arts to avoid confusion. And yes, Tai Chi is a Chinese style of Kung Fu. It is the Art of controlling and manipulating Chi or the inner strength developed by chinese qi gong masters for health or self defense (self defense takes longer, about 13 years minimum to master). In English, Tai Chi Chuan translates into "Grand Ultimate Form".

It is often called internal Kung fu. However, most practitioners weren't allowed to learn Tai Chi (in the old days) unless trhey already learned kung Fu.

Nowadays you can take Tai Chi seperately from Kung Fu, due to the danger of people losing interest.

This is what Grandmaster Sin Kwang The told his students.

truthfully, Taijiquan (Tai Chi) is Kung Fu. Kung Fu is a blanket term to communicate with all chinese language martial arts. human beings have been particularly at a loss for words at the instant and checklist them one after the different. Kung Fu ability success won by confusing paintings. Karate is Okinawan. Taijiquan and Karate are thoroughly unrelated.

technically ALL martial arts are forms of kung fu.

So is building a house, moving furniture, programming a computer, fixing a car and satisfying two women at once.

It literally means "hard work" (close enough).

As far as people "socially" have come to accept it it means chinese martial arts. Tai chi is a form of chinese internal martial arts of which there are three. Tai chi, bagua and xingyi.
