I don't know anyone with autism..but I want to say hey, we all have something that makes us shy or uncomfortable. Sometimes it's a physical disability, sometimes depression or some other problem. You shouldn't feel isolated because you have autism. You're one of us, human beings!

And many people without autism have no social life or feel that people do not understand them. For example anyone coming from another country, not speaking English (my experience some years ago). It's hard but you have to keep working at it and staying strong and positive. Don't let the classmates bother you. They are not perfect little readers either and are probably kind of scared to read out loud too:) Or they're scared of gym class or of math class etc..You're all in school to learn.

ps: reading your message, I had no problem understanding you whatsoever. You explained your feelings very clearly..I wouldn't have known you had autism.

take care!

the biggest tip I can probably give you is to have self confidence. You seem bright and write well. I can read well but I always became very nervous when I had to read out loud in class also. I would even try to figure out what what paragraph I was going to have to read (when we were going down the rows) and read it over and over again so I would not mess up when it got to my turn. In my senior year I finally realized that everyone makes mistakes and not to be so crucial of myself. You should also consider joining clubs at school to make new friends as well as help yourself to open up. If there are no clubs that you like you could also consider volunteering. This is a great esteem booster and it also allows you to meet people you otherwise wouldn't.

In terms of the speech therapy - keep at it, you will continue to improve as long as you keep going and work hard.

As far as social skills, it can be really helpful to join in activities in which you feel confident about yourself. These can help you both meet friends and bolster your confidence around these people. This confidence will bleed over to areas where you may currently struggle (e.g. reading).

Lastly, don't worry about others judging you. It sounds like you have already made a lot of progress with your autism -- and you will continue to do so. Your classmates judgments won't mean much in the long run.

Perhaps going to a support group could be helpful, and you should continue speech therapy. Maybe you should meet kids from your school one on one if you're shy.

Hello Tha 1. I did not know autistics could communicate?!. You should have a milder form of autism or maybe you have something else. For me it is also difficult to socialize and I suffer from depression. It will be useful to go to another doctor to be diagnosed. Maybe you have learning problems.
